Print / Event Design · 2020
Congregation B’nai Israel asked me to design materials for their 2020 annual gala, centered on the theme “Leading with 2020 Vision.”
The theme pointed toward a specific visual idea. “2020 vision” is about clarity of sight. A Star of David, viewed abstractly, has a hexagonal center that reads as a pupil. The logo became a Star of David whose center was an eye, the star’s points radiating outward. It honored the congregation’s Jewish identity, visualized the theme, and gave the entire gala a single coherent image to anchor all the collateral.
The palette was deep navy and silver. A bokeh-style photographic pattern in the background of several pieces evokes the out-of-focus lights of an event space without adding visual noise.
The primary deliverable was a die-cut pocket folder housing several inserts: event program, donor recognition sheet, table card. This format lets the congregation update individual pieces each year while maintaining the overall presentation. It is a practical choice for organizations that need to show up with presence on a real budget.
Designing for a faith community requires care with symbols. The Star of David carries centuries of meaning. Using it as the basis for a visual concept required close work with the client to make sure the idea felt celebratory rather than irreverent. It did.
